“Taking Action to Protect FAIR Education”

Workshop Description

Our workshop will discuss the background of the FAIR (Fair, Accurate, Inclusive, Respectful) Education Act (SB 48) as a pressing progressive issue. The FAIR Education Act is a common sense law that requires schools to integrate factual information about social movements, current events and history of people of color, people with disabilities and LGBT people into existing social studies lessons. Opponents of the FAIR Education Act are pushing people of color and people with disabilities—who have too often and for too long been made invisible in our culture—further into the shadows by blatantly ignoring the law’s inclusion of those communities and using the law as an excuse to once again attack the LGBT community.  We will discuss the statewide action plan to protect FAIR Education, and the implementation of that plan in Orange County.
